Despite the many budget airfares that make travel in Australia fast and affordable, many of us still love the old-world romance of travelling by rail.

There are several classic long-distance rail journeys in different places around Australia, as well as many spectacularly scenic short-distance journeys. Have you ever taken any of these? In your opinion, what's Australia's best rail journey?

We haven't done any of the great Australian train trips but if we did it would be a difficult choice between the Indian Pacific and The Ghan.
I believe the one from adelaide to aires rock is good... I think that is the route? Our next door neighbours were talking about it.
Chip, 'Ayer's Rock'...no train goes there!
The Ghan goes Adelaide to Alice Springs.
Long road trip back to Ayer's Rock or fly, is quicker & easier AND you get to see the Rock from the air & also the 'Olga's'.....pretty impressive!

Donjo...that is correct. Familiar with wa but seriously needing some reading on the rest. Thanks for that....although .... Ayres rock sounds interesting by train if there was one. Lol

The OLD 'Ghan' via Marree to the Alice.
Also have been on the 'New Ghan'.
Have been on Indian Pacific, both ways.
Love train travel!
Yet to travel Alice to Darwin on new 'Ghan'. Will do soon!
